What Is Nutritional Therapy?

‘Remedies from chemicals will never stand in favour compared with the products of nature, the living cell of the plant, the final result of the rays of the sun, the mother of all life.’
Thomas Edison

Nutritional therapy is a science-based complementary medicine which optimises your health through diet and lifestyle changes by following four basic principles:

• You are unique – biochemically, genetically and physiologically and therefore have unique dietary and nutritional needs. You process foods and utilize nutrients differently from other people as a result of genetic and environmental factors.

• I aim to find the underlying causes of your health issues and how your body is functioning and I use symptoms, physical signs and diseases to guide me.

• I consider your body as a whole, as one body system needing support can affect other body systems. For example a less-than-optimal immune function can contribute to heart disease and over 80 auto-immune diseases, a digestive function in need of support can cause hormonal disturbances and your environment can affect your nervous system, predisposing you to neurological diseases.

• Nutritional Therapy is based on scientific evidence and excellent human research.

I utilise the principles expounded and developed by the Institute for Functional Medicine in the management of the nutritional needs of my clients.

Your body is naturally inclined towards optimal health – you experience this when your cut finger heals, your broken bone mends or you recover from a cold.

Nutritional therapy has been repeatedly shown to support the function of all the major systems of the body - skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, excretory, endocrine (hormones), immune, reproductive and integumentary (skin, hair, nails). These are interconnected and need to be considered together to achieve and maintain optimal levels of health.

Food supplementation is sometimes challenged by people who believe that a balanced diet meets everyone’s needs. Owing to our uniqueness, however, some people require higher quantities of certain nutrients than others.
